Health care

No one seems surprised that people live longer and healthier in Hawai'i. Blue skies and fresh air help, but Hawai'i is also one of the leading states when it comes to healthcare.

More than 16,700 highly skilled primary and specialized physicians, nurses and medical technicians offer a complete spectrum of medical treatments, while more than 40 nationally accredited healthcare facilities treat 100,700 in-patients each year. In addition, more than 2 million outpatient visits occur annually at healthcare facilities and medical clinics.

Hawaii is also home to the trauma and burn center for the Pacific Rim and offers specialized heart, cancer and chronic disease programs for children. All islands are linked with air ambulance services.

Health care is Hawai'i's second largest industry. Considering the extremely high quality of our medical facilities, physicians and state-of-the-art technology, in tandem with Hawai'i's beautiful environment, Hawai'i is fast becoming the Healthcare Center of the Pacific. People just love to come here to get well.

Hospital Services and Specialties

Hawai'i's 57 hospitals and 11,000 professionals offer a full spectrum of sophisticated services and comprehensive health care.

The Queen's Medical Center is the Pacific Basin's leading facility for the treatment of life-threatening injuries and shock. It has the only Level II Trauma Center approved by the American College of Surgeons in the state, and no one is ever turned away because of their inability to pay.

St. Francis Medical Center is Hawai'i's only transplant center, specializing in heart, kidney, liver, pancreas and bone marrow transplants.

Straub Clinic & Hospital has introduced many medical firsts to Hawai'i, including minimally invasive open-heart surgery and minimally invasive treatment of abdominal aortic aneurysms.

Kaiser Permanente has one of Hawai'i's largest heart surgery programs. The hospital also offers the only neuroscience program in the state.

1995-2000 Significant Strides in Health Care

  • Hawai'i was one of the first states to establish a patient bill of rights, ensuring quality health care that does not discriminate on the basis of cost.
  • The State of Hawai'i moved aggressively to advance early childhood intervention programs to improve access to health and human services.
  • The State of Hawai'i Telehealth Access Network was created to foster telehealth and telemedicine in Hawai'i.
  • Legislation was approved allowing residential care homes to take care of aging patients, a less expensive option than nursing homes.
  • Health insurance benefits were approved for outpatient mental health, alcohol and drug treatment.
